Small consistent daily steps and habits rebuilt my health. The absolute joy in this photo! We were celebrating as I'd bought a stool and it meant I was able to prepare a meal (standing up, especially standing still was not possible back then).

It's really easy to discount some of these small habits, especially if it feels like you don't have the energy to do anything. I started by building up my physical activity to get into the garden, with time I was walking 30 mins a day, I started reading a paragraph of a book each day, with time I got my brain back and could read as much as I liked.

I often thought what's the point of these minuscule activities, often so far from what you are able to do 'before'. One step, one squat, one page, one ingredient chopped for a meal. Then rest. But with time you'll be doing 2, and 3, and 4...and with time you start to fly.

It's mundane and sometimes tedious but you are always further forward than the day before, or if you didn't take action at all. Start somewhere. It gradually builds and some day you'll come across a photo like this and it takes you right back to that moment. I was proud then, and so proud now.

Ignore the chaos behind me, maybe you relate... only so much can get done around the house when your energy is on the floor.

How a routine blood test opened my eyes to the power of DNA testing.

When my health came crashing down in 2014 I was living with unrelenting exhaustion and what felt like the worst flu of my life. I was in and out of doctors appointments and after blood testing was told I had a condition called Gilberts Syndrome which was given as the reason I was struggling.

In the words of the GP 'it's a benign condition but just makes you feel a little worse when you have a virus'. I was outraged at the time and dismissed it, how could this supposedly a-symptomatic condition sum up the magnitude of illness I was feeling and experiencing.

A few years later during a lecture when I was studying nutrition, I heard the term Gilberts Syndrome again in relation to detoxification pathways and my ears picked up. I learnt that Gilbert's syndrome is caused by a genetic variation or glitch in one of the main pathways that your liver processes all that it needs to. The glucuronidation pathway is particularly important for parcelling up and removing oestrogen, environmental toxins like mould, medications and alcohol from the body. It can also have big implications for gut health, anxiety and stress response.

Sure enough, I tested my DNA and there it was.

Suddenly it all made sense. The issues with mould that I'd had while my husband was fine living in the same house. The relentless menstrual issues that had ruled my life each month. The weird reactions and sensitivities I had to medications. The alcohol intolerance I'd had since the onset of my symptoms all those years ago.

Going back right to the start of my life it explained the jaundice I had as a newborn - Gilberts syndrome means the body isn't able to process bilirubin in the blood which is yellow in colour, so you turn yellow instead!

The power of DNA testing is that once you know this information there is so much you can do with nutrition, supplements and lifestyle to support any issues or glitches. It joined the dots for me in a way that nothing else can. My approach to support my health is truly personalised to my unique genetic makeup, I know what I need and it helps me STAY well.

When I talk about nature I’m really talking about the natural world and all that this encompasses; real food, sunlight, the air that we breathe, plants, water, animals, earth.

These are the fundamentals of health for a human and something that we can feel disconnected from with an energy-limiting condition like CFS.

You can’t always get outside for sunlight
Cooking real food from scratch takes too much energy
You can’t rely on your body to be able to manage a trip to local nature spots

Does your health limit your ability to connect to nature or get outside in the great outdoors?

This can feel so difficult, especially when you know being in that environment would bring the calm, grounding or invigoration that you need.
